Google AdWords - Keyword Match Types

  • Phrase Match

  • Exact same Match

  • Poor Match

  • Broad Match Modifier
  • </ul>

    Extensive Match

This is the default option and As i strongly suggest you don't work with it! To use the broad match option you just simply insert the keyword on its own. When you use comprehensive match any keyword in the phrase can trigger a great ad. So lets say you sell Blue Widgets therefore you use the words Blue Widgets as your keyword. If someone quest for blue cheese your ad may be shown, likewise if someone searches for android widgets your ad could be shown as well. And often see these search terms have nothing to do with that you are selling and would end up costing you a lot profit clicks.

Broad Match can be handy if you are for example selling a product which is new to the market and you are trying to get as much reach as they can. Also if you are selling a product which people are not looking for yet then using broad match can help to generate interest in that which you are selling.

    Phrase Match

As a result of putting your keyword in quotation marks you are setting is as some sort of phrase match. When using phrase coordinate the search query must contain the specified keyword(s) therefore must be in the identical order as specified.

So if you have "Blue Widgets" since your keyword and someone searches for cheap blue widgets or blue widgets Ireland then your ad may be displayed but not when someone searches for blue widget or blue round widgets

I mostly use phrase match when i find it gives me a superb balance between control together with flexibility.

    Exact same Match

To use exact match you get your keywords in block brackets. If you use exact match the seek query must exactly match the specified phrase. So if your words is [blue widgets] in that case your ad will just be shown as soon as some searches for blue widgets and nothing else.

Of the many keyword matching types exact match gives you the greatest control but remember it can be highly unlikely that your own whole target audience would only be looking for the same exact search phrases so by only using exact match there's a chance you're missing out on targeted visitors.

    Poor Match

Should you prefer a specific word or phrase not to show an ad feel free to use a negative match. Negative Match is used jointly with other keyword matching forms.

To use negative match just put a dash before the keyword or phrase. So you might have "Blue Widgets" as that keyword and have -manual as a negative. So if someone searches for blue widgets your ad can be displayed but not if someone searches for blue widgets manual.
Your website landing page is examined and scored by AdWords just like your website is for inclusion over the Google search engine. Performing SEO on your landing pages will improve your quality score. The Google webmaster equipment can provide free here is how Google scores your pages.
